Taiwan – a country inEast Asia, officially named theRepublic of China (ROC). Originally based inmainland China, the ROC now governs theisland of Taiwan, which makes up over 99% of its territory, as well asPenghu,Kinmen,Matsu, andother minor islands.Taipei is the seat of the central government. Following theChinese Civil War, theChinese Communist Party took full control ofmainland China and founded the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The ROC relocated its government to Taiwan, and its jurisdiction became limited toTaiwan and its surrounding islands. In 1971, the PRC assumedChina's seat at the United Nations, which the ROC originally occupied. During the latter half of the 20th century, Taiwan experiencedrapid economic growth andindustrialization and is now anadvanced industrial economy. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Taiwan evolved into ademocracy with universal suffrage. Taiwan is one of theFour Asian Tigers and a member of theWTO andAPEC. The19th-largest economy in the world,[1][2] itshigh tech industry plays a key role in the global economy.
