South Korea – densely populatedsovereign presidential republic located on the southern half of theKorean Peninsula inEast Asia .[ 1] Also known as the "Land of the Morning Calm ". It is neighbored byChina to the west,Japan to the east andNorth Korea to the north. South Korea's capital and largest city isSeoul , the world's second largestmetropolitan city .
Korea has ahistory of 5,000 years,[ 2] with its foundation dating back to 2333 BC by the legendaryDangun . Following the unification of theThree Korean Kingdoms underSilla in AD 668, Korea went through theGoryeo andJoseon Dynasty as one nation until annexed byJapan in 1910.[ 3] After Japan's defeat in World War II, Korea wasdivided , and South Korea was established in 1948. It has since developed a successfuldemocracy , maintaining a strongalliance with theUnited States .
South Korea has the fourth-largest economy inAsia . It had one of the world's fastest growing economies from the 1960s until 1980 and is now considered adeveloped [ 4] economy. It is aG20 andOECD member. In response to tension withNorth Korea , it has developed the world's sixth largestarmed forces and has one of the 10-largestdefence budgets in the world.
South Koreanindustries have a strong focus onscience andtechnology .[ 5] It has an advancedinfrastructure [ 6] andinformation technology such aselectronics ,semiconductors ,LCD displays ,computers ,mobile phones andautomotive industry led byChaebol , a kind of family-owned conglomerate. The economy also has a strong focus onengineering ,construction ,machinery ,textiles ,petrochemicals ,biotechnology androbotics .
