Oswaldo Alberto Cabrera (born March 1, 1999) is a Venezuelan professionalbaseballutility player for theNew York Yankees ofMajor League Baseball (MLB). He signed with the Yankees as afree agent when he was 16 years old. He made his MLB debut in 2022. Cabrera has appeared at every position in MLB except forcatcher.
Cabrera is fromGuarenas in Venezuela. His father, Leobardo, was a professional volleyball player.[1] His brothers, Eleardo and Leobaldo, also played baseball.[2][3] Cabrera trained at the baseball academy run byCarlos Guillén.[4]
Cabrera signed with theNew York Yankees as afree agent in 2015, when he was 16 years old.[5] He received asigning bonus of $100,000. Cabrera began his professional career in theDominican Summer League and was promoted to theGulf Coast League and to thePulaski Yankees of theRookie-levelAppalachian League during the 2016 season. He played for theCharleston RiverDogs of theSingle-ASouth Atlantic League andStaten Island Yankees of theSingle-A Short SeasonNew York-Penn League in 2017. He stayed with Charleston in 2018 before playing for theTampa Tarpons of theSingle-A AdvancedFlorida State League in 2019.[6]
After the 2020 season was cancelled, Cabrera resumed his career with theSomerset Patriots ofDouble-A Northeast in 2021; he led the league inhits andruns batted in (RBIs), and was named the league'smost valuable player.[7] The Yankees added him to their40-man roster, protecting him from being eligible to be selected in theRule 5 draft, after the season.[8] The Yankees optioned Cabrera to theScranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for the start of the 2022 season.[9]
The Yankees promoted Cabrera to the major leagues on August 17, 2022, and he made his major league debut that day as the startingthird baseman.[10][11] The following day, he picked up his first major league hit, a double off ofToronto Blue Jays starterJosé Berríos.[12] In his first six major league games, he also started as ashortstop,second baseman, andright fielder.[13] On September 11, Cabrera hit his first major league home run, againstTampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcherCalvin Faucher atYankee Stadium.[14] On September 21, Cabrera hit his firstgrand slam againstPittsburgh Pirates pitcherRoansy Contreras.[15] In 2022, he batted .247/.312/.429 in 154 at-bats for the Yankees, with six home runs and 19 RBIs.[16] Cabrera began to play as anoutfielder in 2022.[13] He played 27 games in right field, nine games in left field, four games at shortstop, and three games each at first base, second base, and third base.[16]
Cabrera started in left field for the Yankees onOpening Day in 2023 andmanagerAaron Boone named him their starting left fielder.[17] Cabrera batted .195 in 46 games before the Yankeesoptioned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 1.[18] The Yankees recalled Cabrera on June 3 due to an injury toGreg Allen.[19] He finished the regular season with a .211 average, five home runs and 29 RBIs in 115 games. After the 2023 season, Cabrera played winter ball for theTiburones de La Guaira of theVenezuelan Professional Baseball League.[3]
Due to an injury toDJ LeMahieu, Cabrera opened the 2024 season as the Yankees' regular third baseman.[20] On March 29, 2024, Cabrera had his first four-hit game in the major leagues.[21] He made 108 appearances for the Yankees, hitting .247/.296/.365 with eight home runs, 36 RBIs, and four stolen bases.[22]
Cabrera competed to be the starting third baseman before the 2025 season.[23] On May 12, 2025, Cabrera fractured his left ankle while scoring a run at home plate in the ninth inning of a game against theSeattle Mariners. He was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list.[24][25] Cabrera was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 19.[26]
