
TheOrthodox Creed, also known as theOrthodox Confession of Faith, shortly theOrthodox Confession, or even as theBuckingham Creed or as the1679 Baptist Confession of Faith (in modern times), is aGeneral Baptistconfession of faith.[1][2] Drafted up after aBaptist regionalassembly held inBuckinghamshire in 1678, the Orthodox Creed was intended to be an official creed of theGeneral Assembly of General Baptists inEngland; it was adopted by the Buckinghamshire,Hertfordshire,Bedfordshire andOxfordshire Baptist Associations, and was influential within Baptistchurches in England andAmerica.[3]
The Orthodox Confession is organized as an "essay to unite and confirm all trueProtestants in the fundamental articles of the Christian religion". The confession includes 50 articles on theTriune God,christology,predestination,[4]covenant theology (teachingBaptist Federalism),free will,justification andsantification, SundaySabbatarianism,Eucharistic sacramentology,Baptism,Nicene Creed,Athanasian Creed,Apostles Creed, and many other doctrines and practices.
