Ornes orUrnes is a village inLuster Municipality inVestland county,Norway. The village is located on a small peninsula that juts out into theLustrafjorden, the innermost part of theSognefjorden. The village sits on the east side of the fjord, directly across the fjord from the village ofSolvorn. Ornes is notable because it is the site of the 12th centuryUrnes Stave Church.[2]
There has been a regular ferry route from Ornes toSolvorn, across the fjord, since 1859.[3]
TheOld Norse form of the name wasÓrnes. The first element is the prepositionór 'out, outstanding' - the last element isnes 'headland, naze'. The common (but wrong) formUrnes is from the time of Danish rule ("Wrnes" 1563, "Vrnes" 1666, etc.).
