Ormond station is aMetro Trains Melbournerailway station on theFrankston line, which is part of theMelbourne rail network. It serves the south-eastern suburb ofOrmond, inMelbourne, Victoria, Australia. Ormond station is a below groundhost station, featuring three platforms, anisland platform with two faces and one side platform. It opened on 19 December 1881, with the current station provided in August 2016.[4]

Initially opened asNorth Road, the station was given its current name of Ormond on 1 September 1897.[5]

History

[edit]

Ormond station opened on 19 December 1881, when the railway line fromCaulfield was extended toMordialloc.[4] Like the suburb itself, the station was named afterFrancis Ormond, agrazier andphilanthropist in religion and education.[6] Ormond was later elected to theParliament of Victoria in 1882 as a member of theLegislative Council.

In 1922, the station was closed togoods traffic.[4] Asiding at the station was removed in that same year.[4]

In 1968,boom barriers replacedinterlocked gates at the former North Roadlevel crossing, which was located at thedown end of the station.[4] In 1974, all interlocking at the station was abolished.[4] Also in that year, anisland platform and aside platform for services operating in the down direction was provided.[4]

On 28 June 1987, the up face of the former surface-level island platform was brought into use.[7]

On 4 May 2010, as part of the 2010/2011 State Budget, $83.7 million was allocated to upgrade Ormond to apremium station, along with nineteen others.[8][9] However, in March 2011, this was scrapped by theBaillieu Government.[10]

In May 2014, theVictorian Government announced agrade separation project to remove the North Road level crossing, requiring the station to be rebuilt.[11] On 25 March 2016, the station temporarily closed, to allow its demolition and rebuilding below ground level. On 29 August of that year, the rebuilt station opened.
