Organza is a thin, plain weave, sheerfabric traditionally made fromsilk. Many modern organzas are woven with synthetic filamentfibers such aspolyester ornylon. Silk organza is woven by a number of mills along theYangtze River and in the province ofZhejiang inChina. A coarser silk organza is woven in theBangalore area ofIndia. Deluxe silk organzas are woven inFrance andItaly.[1] Organza is distinguished by its crisp hand, stiffness relative to weight, and slippery surface texture.

The term may derive from Frenchorgansin, ultimately from the Central Asian city ofUrgench, the midpoint of theNorthern Silk Road.[2]
