Genus of fishes
Ompok is agenus offish in thefamilySiluridae found inlakes and largerivers throughoutSouth andSoutheast Asia.[1]
The genus is recognized to beparaphyletic. Thespecies ofOmpok have been grouped into species groups, such as theOmpok bimaculatus group (i.e.O. bimaculatus,O. malabaricus andO. miostoma), theO. eugeneiatus group (i.e.O. eugeneiatus andO. pinnatus), theO. hypophthalmus group (i.e.O. hypophthalmus,O. rhabdinurus andO. urbaini) and theO. leiacanthus group (O. fumidus,O. jaynei andO. leiacanthus).[2][3][4] On the other hand, themonophyly of these species groups is not strong enough to reassign species to other genera.[5]
TheO. eugeneiatus group is likely to be more closely related toKryptopterus than the otherOmpok species.[2] According to FerrarisO. eugeneiatus has been reclassified intoKryptopterus, howeverO. pinnatus has not.[6]
