TheOmbudsman's Office of Colombia (Spanish:Defensoría del Pueblo) is the national government agency that is charged with overseeing the protection ofcivil andhuman rights within the legal framework of theRepublic of Colombia.[3] Theombudsman, or People's Defender (Spanish:Defensor del Pueblo), is an official appointed by thePresident, and elected by theChamber of Representatives of Colombia, to head this agency.[4]
The Ombudsman’s Office is funded through theInspector General’s Office, but it operates independently in administration and budget.[4] In addition to its complaint-handling role, the Ombudsman is thenational human rights institution, accredited with A status by theICC.
