Olivier Coipel (French:[kwapɛl]; November 7, 1969) is aFrenchcomic book artist, known for his work on books such asHouse of M,Legion of Super-Heroes,Thor, andThe Ambassadors.

Career

Olivier Coipel started as a movie animator, working as an assistant onBalto and thenThe Prince of Egypt, then as a full animator atThe Road to El Dorado.[1]

Among his influences areArthur Adams.[2]

Coipel came to prominence and significant controversy as the artist of the AmericanDC Comics bookLegion of Super-Heroes during the tenure of writersDan Abnett andAndy Lanning,[3] beginning with the "Legion of the Damned" story arc.

Coipel signed an exclusive contract withMarvel Comics in January 2005.[4] He was named in August 2005 as one of Marvel's "Young Guns," a group of artists that includedJim Cheung,David Finch,Trevor Hairsine,Adi Granov, andSteve McNiven, which according to Marvel Editor-in-ChiefJoe Quesada, exhibited the qualities that make "a future superstarpenciller."

One of Coipel's first major works at Marvel wasHouse of M, an eight-issueNew Avengers/X-Mencrossoverlimited series with writerBrian Michael Bendis. Coipel was then announced as artist on a newThorongoing series that launched in July 2007 with writerJ. Michael Straczynski. The title was nominated for an Eisner in 2009 in the category for Best Continuing Series.[5] Coipel left the title in 2009 when it was announced Straczynski would be leaving. Coipel re-teamed with Bendis for the four-issue 2009Marvel Comics event seriesSiege. In 2010, he provided art for a Magneto-focused backup story leading into theYoung Avengers miniseriesAvengers: the Children's Crusade, before returning to Thor in 2011, illustrating the first arc onMatt Fraction'sThe Mighty Thor.[6]

On April 9, 2011 Coipel was one of 62 comics creators who appeared at theIGN stage at the Kapow! convention in London to set twoGuinness World Records, the Fastest Production of a Comic Book, and Most Contributors to a Comic Book. With Guinness officials on hand to monitor their progress, writerMark Millar began work at 9 am scripting a 20-page black and whiteSuperior comic book, with Coipel and the other artists appearing on stage throughout the day to work on the pencils, inks, and lettering, includingDave Gibbons,Frank Quitely,John Romita Jr.,Jock,[7]Doug Braithwaite,Ian Churchill,Duncan Fegredo,Simon Furman,David Lafuente,John McCrea,Sean Phillips andLiam Sharp,[8] who all drew a panel each, with regularSuperior artistLeinil Yu creating the book's front cover. The book was completed in 11 hours, 19 minutes, and 38 seconds, and was published through Icon on November 23, 2011, with all royalties being donated to Yorkhill Children's Foundation.[7]In 2012, Coipel penciled issues #6–7 and #11 of the Marvel crossover miniseriesAvengers vs. X-Men. Coipel drew issues 9–11 and 14 ofThe Amazing Spider-Man, which were published in 2014.

In November 2016 Coipel and writerJason Aaron started the series The Unworthy Thor. The series follows the original Thor, who now refers to himself as Odinson, as he tries to find his purpose after relinquishing his name and title to Foster.[9]
