Olga Kostyantynivna Kurylenko[a][b] (born 14 November 1979)[1][2] is a Ukrainian and French actress and former model. She rose to prominence by playing the Bond girlCamille Montes in theJames Bond filmQuantum of Solace (2008).

Kurylenko began her career modelling inParis before making a transition to acting. She had herbreakthrough role in the action thrillerHitman (2007) after making her film debut in the dramaThe Ring Finger (2005). FollowingQuantum of Solace, she went on to star in the romantic dramaTo the Wonder (2012), the crime comedySeven Psychopaths (2012), the science fiction filmOblivion (2013), the political satireThe Death of Stalin (2017), the comedyThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018), the superhero filmsBlack Widow (2021) andThunderbolts* (2025), theNetflix spy thriller miniseriesTreason (2022) and the action thrillerExtraction 2 (2023).

Early life

Olga Kostyantynivna Kurylenko[3] was born on 14 November 1979 inBerdyansk, a port city inZaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine.[1]Ukraine was aconstituent republic of theSoviet Union at the time of her birth. Kurylenko's father, Konstantin Kurylenko, isUkrainian. Her mother, Marina Alyabusheva, teaches art and is an exhibited artist. Marina's father was aRussian factory worker, and her mother, Raisa, was aBelarusian doctor. Marina and Konstantin divorced when Kurylenko was three years old. Growing up poor, Kurylenko lived in a small house with her maternal grandparents, Marina[4][5][6][7] and their relatives.[8] She rarely had contact with Konstantin, meeting him for the first time after the split at the age of eight and later at the age of thirteen.[2][9]

Kurylenko moved to Moscow at age 15. At age 16, she moved to Paris.[10] In 1996, Kurylenko signed a contract with the Paris-based Madison modelling agency where she met her publicist Valérie Rosen.[11] The following year, by the age of 18, she had appeared on the covers ofVogue andElle magazines.[12] While working as a model in Paris, Kurylenko supported her mother in Ukraine.[13]

She also appeared on the covers ofMadame Figaro andMarie Claire magazines.[14] She became the face of brandsBebe,Clarins, andHelena Rubinstein.[14] She has also modelled forRoberto Cavalli andKenzo[15] and appeared in theVictoria's Secret catalogue.[16] In 1998, she features in the music video of FrenchRaï style singerFaudel called "Tellement Je T'aime".

One of her first acting appearances was inSeal's music video, "Love's Divine" in 2003,[17] but her film career truly began in France in 2004 when she shot her first feature film,The Ring Finger,[18] for which she received the certificate of excellence award at the 2006Brooklyn International Film Festival for her performance. She next starred in theParis, je t'aime (2006) segmentQuartier de la Madeleine oppositeElijah Wood. That same year, she was selected to be the face of Kenzo's new fragrance,Kenzo Amour.[19] She has appeared in all subsequentKenzo Amour advertisements.[citation needed]

Kurylenko quit modelling in 2006, after more than ten years of working in the industry and moved on to acting.[18] In 2007, she starred inHitman alongsideTimothy Olyphant. She had a minor role inMax Payne as Natasha.

She playedBond girlCamille Montes in the 2008James Bond film,Quantum of Solace (after beating outGal Gadot in the auditions).[20] In the film she plays the role of Bolivian Secret Service agentCamille Montes, who teams up with Bond to stop aterrorist organization and avenge the death of her parents.[21][22] Russian politicianSergey Malinkovich wrote an open letter to Kurylenko.[23] In it he said: "In the name of all communists we appeal to you ... deserter of Slavic world. The Soviet Union gave you free education, free medical care but nobody knew you would commit an act of intellectual and moral betrayal and become a movie girl of Bond, who in his movies kills hundreds of Soviet people and citizens of other socialist countries."[23]

She was featured on the cover of the December 2008 issue of the US edition ofMaxim magazine[24] and on the cover of the February 2009 issue of the Ukrainian edition ofMaxim.[25] In Ukraine the mayor ofBerdyansk suggested naming a street after her in early 2008,[citation needed] and she and her mother met Ukraine'sFirst LadyKateryna Yushchenko in PresidentVictor Yushchenko's family country house.[11][12]

Kurylenko appeared inTerrence Malick's romantic drama filmTo the Wonder starringBen Affleck andRachel McAdams. The film was shot in the fall of 2010 inBartlesville, Oklahoma.[26] She also appeared inOblivion, a science fiction film starringTom Cruise and directed byJoseph Kosinski.[27] Kurylenko played Alice Fournier in the spy thrillerNovember Man.[28] In 2014, Kurylenko starred in the historical drama filmThe Water Diviner alongsideRussell Crowe (who made his directorial debut),Jacqueline McKenzie andJai Courtney. She also played the headmistress inVampire Academy. She later acted in films such asMomentum,Mara andThe Bay of Silence.

In 2017, she appeared inArmando Iannucci's political satire filmThe Death of Stalin as theSovietpianistMaria Yudina. The film was a critical success and starredSteve Buscemi,Simon Russell Beale,Jason Issacs,Michael Palin, andJeffrey Tambor. The following year she starred inTerry Gilliam's epic adventure filmThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018) starringAdam Driver andJonathan Pryce where it premiered at the2018 Cannes Film Festival. She also appeared as Baroness Roxane de Giverny inThe Emperor of Paris, and as the Russian spy in theRowan Atkinson led comedy filmJohnny English Strikes Again (2018).

In 2021, she starred in the action thriller filmSentinelle.[29] In the same year, she playedAntonia Dreykov / Taskmaster in theMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) filmBlack Widow.[30][31] In October, she was cast in comedy heist filmHigh Heat alongsideDon Johnson.[32]

Personal life

Kurylenko acquired French citizenship in 2001,[33] which she called "a practical decision" because it was easier to travel with a French passport without a visa, as opposed to travelling with a Ukrainian passport.[8] In 2000, Kurylenko married French fashion photographer Cedric van Mol, whom she divorced four years later.[34] In 2006, Kurylenko married American mobile phone accessory entrepreneur Damian Gabrielle, whom she divorced the next year.[35] She moved to London in 2009.[36][37][38] Kurylenko has a son[4] with her former partner, English actor and writerMax Benitz, whom she met in 2014.[5][39]
