Olaf Lies (born 8 May 1967) is a German politician of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD). In May 2025 he was elected asMinister-President of the federal state ofLower Saxony.[1]
Lies joined theSocial Democratic Party in 2002. In the2008 state elections he became member of theLandtag of Lower Saxony. He was leader of his party inLower Saxony from 2010[2] to 2012.[3]
Minister-PresidentStephan Weil of Lower Saxony appointed Lies to the position of State Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport in 2013 and later to State Minister for Environment, Energy, Building, and Climate Protection in hiscabinet.[4]
In the negotiations to form acoalition government under the leadership ofChancellorAngela Merkel following the2017 federal elections, Lies was part of the working group on energy, climate protection and the environment, led byArmin Laschet,Georg Nüßlein andBarbara Hendricks.
In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of the SPD, theGreen Party and theFree Democratic Party (FDP) following the2021 federal elections, Lies was part of his party's delegation in the working group on agriculture and nutrition, co-chaired byTill Backhaus,Renate Künast andCarina Konrad.[5]
Lies was nominated by his party as delegate to theFederal Convention for the purpose of electing thePresident of Germany in2022.[6]
