Ogilby (formerly,Oglesby)[3] is aghost town inImperial County,California, United States.[2][4] Ogilby is located on theSouthern Pacific Railroad 42 miles (68 km) east ofEl Centro,[3] and 3.8 miles (6.1 km) north ofInterstate 8 onCounty Road S34.[5] The name is official for federal use, and a feature ID number of 252950 has been assigned. Ogilby is defined by the US Geological Survey as a populated place at 356 feet (109 m)AMSL elevation. NAD27latitude andlongitude are listed at32°49′01″N114°50′20″W / 32.81694°N 114.83889°W /32.81694; -114.83889 on the "Ogilby, California" 7.5-minute quadrangle (map).[6] It is included in the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District. It lies at an elevation of 364 feet (111 m).[2]

History

Ogilby was founded as a railroad stop for theSouthern Pacific in 1877, and served as a supply point for the mining communities ofGlamis,Hedges, andTumco.[1] The Oglesby post office operated for part of 1880.[3] The Ogilby post office operated from 1890 to 1895, moving in 1892, and from 1898 to 1942.[3] The name honors E.R. Ogilby, mine promoter.[3] Parts of the secondPlank Road were assembled in Ogilby.[1] The town was abandoned by 1961.[1]

Ogilby lies along theUnion Pacific Railroad tracks east ofAlgodones Dunes.[5]

Ogilby Hills, to the southeast, have summits in the 600–800-foot (180–240 m) AMSL range.[5]

A Catholiccemetery exists to the south and west of the railroad line at32°48′55″N114°50′20″W / 32.81528°N 114.83889°W /32.81528; -114.83889.[5]

The closest city isYuma, Arizona, at about 25 miles (40 km) driving distance.

The international border withMexico lies about 9 miles (14 km) in a straight line to the south. TheArizona state line lies about 7 miles (11 km) southeast.[7]
