Oedipodium is the onlygenus ofmoss in the familyOedipodiaceae. It contains the single speciesOedipodium griffithianum, thegouty-moss[5] orGriffith's oedipodium moss.[6] This species is distributed in cooler climates ofEurasia, as well as fromAlaska,Washington state,British Columbia,Yukon,Greenland,Newfoundland,Tierra del Fuego and theFalkland Islands.[7]
The relationship ofOedipodium to other mosses has been much debated. Previously, the taxon has been included with theFunariales or theSplachnales. However, characteristics of theprotonemata and asexual propagation, along with molecular evidence, point to a closer relationship with theTetraphidaceae.[7]
