TheOdacidae are a smallfamily ofray-finned fishes commonly known ascales andweed whitings, formerly classified within theorderPerciformes. They are related to the much larger families of thewrasses andparrotfish.[2] More recent workers have classified this family within the orderLabriformes, alongside thewrasses andparrotfishes, within thecladePercomorpha.[3]
Odacids are found in coastal waters offSouthern Australia andNew Zealand. They include species that feed on small invertebrates, as well as herbivorous grazers, some of which are able to feed on chemically unpleasant varieties ofkelp otherwise unpalatable to fish.[2]
The following genera are classified in the family Odacidae:[4]
Fishbase places six species in the genusSiphonognathus.[5]Catalog of Fishes, in contrast, places four of the six species in the separate genusSheardichthys and placesS. caninis in themonospecific genusParodax, leavingSiphonognathus as a monospecific genus containing onlyS. argyrophanes.[6]
