In recent decades, the number of warm temperature records in October has outpaced cold temperature records over a growing portion of Earth's surface.[1]

October is the 10th month of the year in theJulian andGregorian calendars. Its length is 31 days. The eighth month in the oldcalendar of Romulusc. 750 BC, October retained its name (fromLatin andGreekôctō meaning "eight") after January and February were inserted into the calendar that had originally been created by the Romans. InAncient Rome, one of threeMundus patet would take place on October 5,Meditrinalia October 11,Augustalia on October 12,October Horse on October 15, andArmilustrium on October 19. These dates do not correspond to the modern Gregorian calendar. Among theAnglo-Saxons, it was known asWinterfylleth (Ƿinterfylleþ), because at this full moon, winter was supposed to begin.[2]

October is commonly associated with the season ofautumn in parts of theNorthern Hemisphere, andspring in parts of theSouthern Hemisphere, where it is the seasonal equivalent toApril in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa.

Days on which all four leagues play are colloquially known as asports equinox.[19]
