Oberndorf bei Salzburg (Austrian German pronunciation:[ˈoːbɐndɔrfbaɪˈsaltsbʊrɡ],lit.'Oberndorf near Salzburg';Central Bavarian:Owerndorf ba Såizburg) is asmall city in theAustrian state ofSalzburg, about 17 km (11 mi) north of theCity of Salzburg. It is situated on the riverSalzach in theFlachgau district.Town privileges were granted on 30 April 2001.[3]

History

The town across the Salzach isLaufen inBavaria. The town was split in two in the wake of theNapoleonic Wars when the former Principality of theSalzburg Archbishops was divided in 1816 following theCongress of Vienna into a part taken by theKingdom of Bavaria and a part taken by theAustrian Empire.

Silent Night

Oberndorf is famous worldwide as the birthplace of the carolSilent Night (German:Stille Nacht), which was first performed atNikolauskirche, then the parish church, by the schoolmasterFranz Xaver Gruber and the young priestJoseph Mohr onChristmas Eve 1818, from where it spread out to the world. As in the 1890s severalfloods of the Salzach River destroyed large parts of Oberndorf, the church was finally demolished and a memorial chapel erected on its site in 1937. A full-scalereplica of the memorial chapel, built in 1992, can be found inFrankenmuth, Michigan.[4]

Oberndorf can be reached from Salzburg byS-Bahn rapid transit railway and theB 156 Lamprechtshausener Straßefederal highway running from Salzburg towardBraunau am Inn.
