The station is situated almost halfway betweenLeicester – 27 miles (43 km) to the west – andPeterborough – 25 miles (40 km) eastward on the (as built)Syston and Peterborough Railway, the line is theBirmingham to Peterborough Line.
Oakham is the only surviving passenger railway station in Rutland. The line is served byCrossCountry services betweenBirmingham New Street andStansted Airport orCambridge. There is also an infrequentEast Midlands Railway service toLondon St Pancras.
The station was opened by theMidland Railway on 1 May 1848. The building was designed by the company architect, Edward Wood of London, and isGrade II listed.[1]
The station building, the nearby level crossing signal box and footbridge are all listed buildings. The signal box was the prototype for theAirfix kit signal box.[9] The station footbridge was refurbished between October 2020 and April 2021.[10]
From Oakham there is an hourly service in each direction operated byCrossCountry. Services run westbound toBirmingham New Street viaLeicester, whilst services eastbound run toStansted Airport viaCambridge.[11]

The company introduced a further return service fromDerby viaEast Midlands Parkway (forEast Midlands Airport) from May 2010.[13] An early morning service runs fromNottingham toNorwich and an evening service operates fromSpalding via Peterborough to Nottingham.
The station retains a ticket office which is staffed seven days a week, a car park, and help points for times where there are no staff present.
