Armament

ORPDzik (Boar) was aU-classsubmarine built byVickers-Armstrong atBarrow-in-Furness. She was laid down on 30 December 1941 asP-52 for theRoyal Navy but was transferred to thePolish Navy during construction. Launched on 11 November 1942, ORPDzik was commissioned into the Polish Navy on 12 December 1942. Her name meant "Wild Boar" inPolish.

24 May 1943 NearCape Spartivento, ORP Dzik fired a 4-torpedo salvo and damaged theItalianoil tankerCarnaro (8357 Gross Register Tonnage). After the attack, two Italiancorvettes dropped over 60depth charges.

21 Sep 1943 ORPDzik fired torpedoes inBastia harbour,Corsica,France and sank theGermantankerNikolaus (6397, formerGreekNikolaou Ourania) and the German tugKraft (333 Gross Register Tonnage).

8 Jan 1944 ORPDzik sank the Greek sailing vesselEleni (200 Gross Register Tonnage) with gunfire offLesbos Island,Greece in position 39.37N, 25.43E.

ORPDzik destroyed or damaged 18 surface ships bothGerman andItalian with a total tonnage of 45,080 tons. She participated inOperation Husky, theAllied invasion of Sicily, and also engaged enemy surface ships with her 76 mm cannon three times and the crew boarded two enemy ships. The ORPDzik earned theJolly Roger.

In July 1946, the Polish Navy decommissioned her and returned her to theRoyal Navy.

In 1947, the ship was transferred to theRoyal Danish Navy. She sailed as HDMSU-1 and was later renamed toHDMSSpringeren. She was returned to theRoyal Navy in April 1958 and scrapped.
