Brandi Hicks Degroat (born August 3, 1982), better known by thering nameNyla Rose, is an Americanprofessional wrestler and actress. She is signed toAll Elite Wrestling (AEW), where she is a one-timeAEW Women's World Champion.

Upon joining AEW in 2019, Rose became the first openlytransgender wrestler to sign with a major Americanpromotion, and her reign as AEW Women's World Champion made her the first transgender wrestler to win a championship in a major American promotion. Outside of wrestling, she played the lead role in the 2016 Canadian comedy seriesThe Switch.

Early life

Brandi Hicks Degroat was born on August 3, 1982, inWashington, D.C.[4][5] She hasAfrican American andNative American (Oneida) ancestry.[2] She grew up watching wrestling with her grandmother.[6] She begantransitioning in college.[6]

Professional wrestling career

Independent circuit (2013–2019)

Rose made her professional wrestling debut at the age of 30 on December 8, 2012, after being trained by John Kermon, Hype Rockwell, Christian York, and Jimmy Z at the KYDA Pro Training School inMorgantown, West Virginia.[7] Until 2019, she wrestled on the Americanindependent circuit for promotions such asWomen Superstars Uncensored. She also appeared in Japan with promotions such asPro Wrestling Zero1 andSendai Girls' Pro Wrestling.[8]

All Elite Wrestling (2019–present)

Rose signed withAll Elite Wrestling (AEW) in February 2019, becoming the first openlytransgender wrestler to sign with a major Americanprofessional wrestling promotion.[9][10][11][12][13] Rose made her AEW debut at the promotion's inaugural event,Double or Nothing.[14] Her scheduled triple threat match againstDr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. andKylie Rae was turned into a fatal four-way match with the surprise addition ofAwesome Kong. Rose was not involved in the decision, after spearing Kong into the ring steps shortly before Baker pinned Rae.[15]

AtFyter Fest, she was involved in a triple threat match withRiho andYuka Sakazaki; after the match, Rose attacked both women, establishing herself as a heel in the process.[16] Rose took part in the AEW Women'sCasino Battle Royal atAll Out, which she went on to win, earning the opportunity to compete to become the inauguralAEW Women's World Champion.[17] On the premiere ofDynamite on October 2, Rose was defeated by Riho for the title, and attacked Riho after the match ended.[18] On February 12, 2020, Rose defeated Riho to win the AEW Women's World Championship onDynamite, becoming the first transgender woman to win a world championship in a major United States wrestling promotion.[19] She successfully defended the title againstKris Statlander atRevolution on February 29.[20] On May 23 atDouble or Nothing, Rose lost the title toHikaru Shida.[21] On July 15, Rose introducedVickie Guerrero as hermanager.[22]

In February 2021, it was announced that Rose would be competing in theAEW Women's World ChampionshipEliminator Tournament. In the opening round of the U.S. side of the bracket, Rose picked up a victory overTay Conti, and on the February 24 edition ofDynamite, she picked up a victory overBritt Baker to advance to the tournament U.S. tournament finals.[23] There, Rose defeatedThunder Rosa on March 1. She lost toRyo Mizunami in the overall tournament finals on the March 3 edition ofDynamite.[24] On July 21 atFyter Fest Rose faced Britt Baker for the AEW Women's World Championship which Rose lost bysubmission.[25] On November 17 episode ofDynamite Rose took part in theAEW Women's TBS championship tournament where she faced Hikaru Shida and defeated her making Rose advance to the next round.[26] On the December 22 special episode ofDynamite beingAEW Holiday Bash, Rose facedRuby Soho in the semi-finals of the tournament which Rose lost.[27]

On April 16, 2022, atAEW Battle of The Belts ll, Rose facedThunder Rosa in the main event of the show for the AEW Women's World Championship which Rose lost.[28]

In December 2023, Rose faced Alejandra Lion on an episode ofRing of Honor Wrestling, which was taped alongsideAEW Holiday Bash at thePaycom Center inOklahoma City. Because of Oklahoma's laws regardingtransgender participation in sport, the state's athletic commission (which still regulates professional wrestling) censured AEW for violating their rules regarding "intergender wrestling".[29] AEW and ROH ownerTony Khan expressed his disappointment with the decision and offered his support to both Rose personally andtransgender rights in general, although he was did not specify whether AEW would host more events in Oklahoma.[30]

Other ventures

In 2016, Rose played the lead character in the Canadian comedy seriesThe Switch.[31] In 2022, she co-wrote the comicGiant-Size X-Men: Thunderbird #1 withSteve Orlando and artist David Cutler.[32]
