Several mythological figures

InGreek mythology,Nycteus (Ancient Greek:Νυκτεύς,romanizedNukteús,lit.'nocturnal') can refer to the following figures:

  • Nycteus, king-regent ofThebes and father ofAntiope whom he punished for bearing sons toZeus.[1]
  • Nycteus, one of the comrades ofDiomedes who were turned into birds byAphrodite.[2]
  • Nycteus, the name ofCallisto's father in some rare versions.[3]
  • Nycteus, king of theAethiopians and father ofNyctaea, who consorted with him secretly under false pretences. When Nycteus figured out who his bedmate was, he tried to kill Nyctaea but she was transformed into a bird byAthena.[4][5] This story is a parallel to the one withSmyrna and her fatherCinyras orTheias, the parents ofAdonis.
  • Nycteus, a black horse, one of the four horses that drawHades' chariot.[6]
