Nuno André da Silva Coelho (Portuguese:[ˈnunuɐ̃ˈdɾɛkuˈɐʎu]; born 7 January 1986) is a Portuguese former professionalfootballer who played as acentral defender.
Born inPenafiel, Coelho reachedFC Porto from northern neighboursF.C. Penafiel aged 18, and spent his first professional months withthe reserve side, being loaned shortly after toF.C. Maia of thesecond division. He spent the next three seasons out on loan, toStandard Liège,Portimonense SC, for which he played alongside namesakeNuno Miguel Coelho in the2007–08 season also in the second tier, andC.F. Estrela da Amadora.[2][3]
Coelho made hisPrimeira Liga debut withC.F. Estrela da Amadora on 24 August 2008, playing 90 minutes forC.F. Estrela da Amadora in a 1–0 home win againstAcadémica de Coimbra.[4] In July 2009, he returned to Porto following the retirement of veteranPedro Emanuel, appearing only once duringthe league campaign, the 4–1 victory atU.D. Leiria in the last matchday (adding fourTaça da Liga games and the first half of the 5–0 away loss toArsenal in theUEFA Champions Leagueround-of-16 second leg).[5][6]
On 4 July 2010, Coelho signed a four-year contract withSporting CP for€1million, asJoão Moutinho moved in the opposite direction; the northerners retained 50% of the player's rights.[7][8] His first official match came on 14 August in a 1–0 defeat atF.C. Paços de Ferreira.[9] On the 26th he scored a rare goal, shooting from 40 metres as theLions defeatedBrøndby IF 3–0 after losing 0–2 at home, thusqualifying for theUEFA Europa League's group stage.[10]
After the end of2010–11 – where he was used sparingly, often not being selected for matches even when healthy – on 7 June 2011, Coelho was sold toS.C. Braga as an installment deduction on the transfers ofJoão Pereira andEvaldo, agreeing to a four-year deal.[11] His three-year spell inMinho was marred by several injury problems.[12][13]
Coelho joinedBalıkesirspor fromTurkey on 5 July 2014, on a three-year deal.[14] On 26 January 2016, after several months without a club, he moved to theMajor League Soccer withSporting Kansas City,[15] scoring from 30 yards in his debut in a 1–0 away win over theSeattle Sounders FC.[16]
On 21 January 2017, Coelho agreed to a short-term contract atG.D. Chaves.[17] He retired two years later at the age of 33, after three seasons as a backup andrelegation in his last.[3]
Over roughly two years, Coelho played for thePortugal under-21 team.[18] On 29 August 2010 he was first called to thesenior side, for twoUEFA Euro 2012qualifiers againstCyprus andNorway,[19] but did not make his debut.
