Archaeological and prehistoric site in Tunisia
Numluli Henchir-Mâtria is anarchaeological andprehistoric site innorthern Tunisia .[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] Henchir-Mâtria is at36°31′23.4″N 9°13′11.1″E / 36.523167°N 9.219750°E /36.523167; 9.219750 , betweenBéja andDougga and elevation of 407 metres (1,335 feet).[ 1] [ 4] It is on theOued el Beida River.
During theRoman Empire andlate antiquity Henchir-Mâtria was acivitas in theRoman province ofAfrica Proconsolaris called Numluli.[ 5] [ 6] [ 7]
Several structures have been uncovered there.[ 8] [ 9]
Duringantiquity Henchir-matria was also theseat of an ancient ChristianBishopric ,[ 10] [ 11] suffragan to theArchdiocese of Carthage . History records two bishops of the town Aurelius aCatholic attendee at theCouncil of Carthage of 411, and the bishop Donatian who attended the antimonothetalism Council of 646. Today thediocese survives astitular see of theRoman Catholic Church . The Most recent Bishop wasWilliam Clifford Newman , ofBaltimore , who died May 20th, 2017.
