Notocetus is anextinctgenus ofriver dolphin belonging toSqualodelphinidae. Knownspecimens have been found inEarly Miocene marine deposits fromArgentina,Italy andPeru.[1][2]
Notocetus was unnecessarily given the replacement nameDiochoticus byAmeghino (1894) on the false assumption thatNotocetus was preoccupied byNotiocetus.Lydekker (1894), meanwhile, erectedArgyrodelphis for the same specimen.[3][4] Thetype species ofOtekaikea was once considered a species ofNotocetus before being recognized as belonging toWaipatiidae.[5][6]
Fossils ofNotocetus have been found in:[7]
Paired analysis of the ultrastructure of itsenamel, which was thin in theanterior teeth and thick in theposterior teeth, and itsskullmorphology suggests thatN. vanbenedeni was a suction feeder.[8]
