Norton Prentiss Otis (March 18, 1840 – February 20, 1905) was aU.S. Representative fromNew York.

Biography

Otis was born inHalifax, Vermont. His father wasElisha Otis, inventor of the safety elevator and a descendant of theOtis family that is counted among theBoston Brahmin families. He attended public schools in Halifax,Albany,Hudson, andYonkers, New York. In his early youth, he entered into business with his father and engaged in the manufacture ofelevators for nearly fifty years.[1]

Otis served as mayor of Yonkers from 1880 to 1882 and was a member of theNew York State Assembly (Westchester Co., 1st D.) in1884. He served as president of the New York State Commission to theExposition Universelle of 1900 and as president ofSt. John's Riverside Hospital of Yonkers. In 1900, he was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the57th United States Congress.[1]

Otis was elected as aRepublican to the58th United States Congress and representedNew York's 19th congressional district from March 4, 1903 until his death from cancer inWestchester County, New York on February 20, 1905. He was interred atOakland Cemetery.[1] He also was related toAmelia Earhart.
