North East Fife is acounty constituency of theScottish Parliament covering part of thecouncil area ofFife.[2] It elects oneMember of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by thefirst past the post method of election. Under theadditional-member electoral system used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, it is also one of nine constituencies in theMid Scotland and Fifeelectoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to the nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form ofproportional representation for the region as a whole.[3] As a result of thesecond periodic review of Scottish Parliament boundaries in 2025, the constituency will be renamedFife North East to avoid confusion with theNorth East Fife constituency of the UK Parliament.[4]

The seat has been held since the2016 Scottish Parliament election byWillie Rennie, the former leader of theScottish Liberal Democrats.

The seat is one of five representing Fife theScottish Parliament with the other four beingCowdenbeath,Dunfermline,Kirkcaldy, andMid Fife and Glenrothes.[2]

The constituency was created at the same time as the Scottish Parliament, in1999, with the name and boundaries of a pre-existing UKHouse of Commons constituency. Since the2005, however, UK and Scottish parliamentary constituencies have diverged, and there is no longer any link between the two sets of boundaries.[6]

The boundaries of the seat were reviewed ahead of the2011 Scottish Parliament election as part of thefirst periodic review of Scottish Parliament boundaries. The followingelectoral wards ofFife Council were used to define the reshaped North East Fife constituency:[7]

At the second periodic review of Scottish Parliament boundaries in 2025 the seat boundaries were unchanged, however from the2026 Scottish Parliament election onwards the constituency will be renamedFife North East to avoid confusion with theNorth East Fife constituency of the UK Parliament.[4]
