North Chungcheong Province (Korean충청북도;RRChungcheongbuk-do), also known asChungbuk, is aprovince ofSouth Korea. North Chungcheong has a population of 1,578,934 (2014) and has a geographic area of 7,433 km2 (2,870 mi2) located in theHoseo region on the south-centre of theKorean Peninsula. North Chungcheong borders the provinces ofGyeonggi andGangwon to the north,North Gyeongsang to the east,North Jeolla to the south andSouth Chungcheong,Sejong Special Autonomous City andDaejeon Metropolitan City to the west.

Cheongju is the capital and largest city of North Chungcheong, with other major cities includingChungju andJecheon.

North Chungcheong was established in 1896 from the province ofChungcheong, one of theEight Provinces of Korea, consisting of the northeastern half of the territory, and is South Korea's onlylandlocked province. North Chungcheong was known asChūsei-hoku Prefecture during theJapanese Colonial Period from 1910 and became part of South Korea following thedivision of Korea in 1945.

Geography

The province is part of theHoseoregion, and is bounded on the west byChungcheongnam-do province, on the north byGyeonggi-do andGangwon-do provinces, on the south byJeollabuk-do province, and on the east byGyeongsangbuk-do. Chungcheongbuk-do is the only land-locked province inSouth Korea. The province is mostly mountainous, dominated by theNoryeong Mountains to the north and theSobaek Mountains to the east.

Resources

Agricultural products includesrice,barley,beans, andpotatoes, but the province specializes inginseng andtobacco. The tobacco was introduced from the US in 1912, transplanted fromVirginia.

There are mineral reserves ofgold,iron,coal,steatite,fluorite, andmolybdenum, as well asmarble andlimestone in the northern part of the province. Silk weaving plays an important role.

Attractions

The main attractions in the province areMount Songni (1,058 metres [3,471 ft]) in theSobaek mountains and its national park.Beopjusa, the site of one of the oldest temples of Korea is located in this national park, as isGuinsa, the headquarters of theCheontae sect. There is another national park aroundMount Worak.
