Norman Mark Reedus[1][2] (born January 6, 1969)[3][4] is an American actor. Starting his career as a model, he first rose to prominence as an actor for his role as Murphy MacManus inThe Boondock Saints (1999), which he reprised inThe Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009). Aside from an occasional supporting role in larger budget films such asBlade II (2002) andAmerican Gangster (2007), Reedus mostly starred in independent film productions until being cast asDaryl Dixon in theAMC horror drama seriesThe Walking Dead (2010–2022). Regarded as one of the series' most popular characters, he currently stars as Dixon in the spin-off seriesThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023–present).

Reedus is also the host of the AMCtravel showRide with Norman Reedus (2016–present) and starred as protagonist Sam Porter Bridges in the video gamesDeath Stranding (2019) andDeath Stranding 2: On the Beach (2025).

Early life, family and education

Norman Mark Reedus was born on 6 January 1969 inHollywood, Florida, the son of Marianne (née Yarber), a teacher and formerPlayboy bunny,[5] and Ira Norman Reedus.[6] Reedus's paternal grandmother was of Italian and French descent, while his grandfather had English, Scottish, and Irish ancestry.[7][better source needed][6] His parents divorced when he was young.[5] He has a sister, Leslie.[6]

As a teen, Reedus lived inJapan with his mother.[8][5] He attendedBethany College inLindsborg, Kansas, for a semester.[citation needed]

Career

Reedus worked at aHarley-Davidson shop inVenice, Los Angeles,California, and contributed artwork to various shows as a painter, photographer, sculptor, and video artist.[1] He first acted in the playMaps for Drowners at theTiffany Theater onSunset Boulevard.[9]

Film and television

Reedus played Jeremy in his major film debutMimic[10] and Mac in Giovanni Rodriguez'sRed Canyon.[11] He played Murphy MacManus in the 1999 filmThe Boondock Saints.[12] In 2005, he starred in as the main protagonist the hour-long "Cigarette Burns", aJohn Carpenter-directed episode ofMasters of Horror, in which his character seeks a uniquely cursedlost film about an imprisonedfallen angel. He reprised the role of MacManus in the 2009 sequelThe Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.[13] He played Scud inBlade II. He guest-starred inCharmed as Nate, the boyfriend of Paige (Rose McGowan). Reedus starred inHello Herman, which opened nationwide andon-demand on June 7, 2013.[14] Reedus stars in the reality seriesRide with Norman Reedus, which premiered in June 2016.[15] Most recently, he started Bigbaldhead Productions with an overall deal atAMC.[16]

Reedus played Daniel Pine in the 2025John Wick spin-off,Ballerina, alongsideKeanu Reeves andAna de Armas. In March 2024,Thunder Road Films, Dragonfly Films and Impossible Dream Entertainment announced a "reimagining" ofThe Boondock Saints, with Reedus and co-starSean Patrick Flanery reprising their roles from the first two films and serving as executive producers, althoughTroy Duffy would not return as director for thethird film; instead, he plans to write a series of novels.[17]

The Walking Dead

In 2010, Reedus began playingDaryl Dixon in theAMC television seriesThe Walking Dead, a horror drama about a group of friends and family members who fight to survive in a violent apocalyptic world populated with flesh-eating zombies and the few surviving humans. The character was not originally in thecomic book series of the same name, but was created specifically for Reedus after his audition for the character ofMerle Dixon.The Walking Dead comic creatorRobert Kirkman feels "absolutely blessed Reedus has honored the show with his presence, and the way he has come in and taken over that role and defined Daryl Dixon. A lot of Reedus's portrayal of the character inthe first season inspired all the writers to do what we did with him in thesecond season. We love writing him and end up doing cool stuff with him." The drama has evolved into the highest-rated in cable history, smashing all previous records.[18] Reedus was nominated for aSaturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance and has overall received critical acclaim for the role.

Reedus reprised his role of Daryl as the lead of aspin-off series centered on his character, following the conclusion of the 11th and final season ofThe Walking Dead.Angela Kang is the showrunner for the series, which debuted in September 2023.[19]

Modeling, music videos, and art

Reedus has modeled for Prada,Yohji Yamamoto,Alessandro Dell'Acqua,Durban,Levi's,Lexus, and Morgenthal Fredrics.[citation needed] In 2015, Reedus posed for aCruelty Free International advertisement in support of ending cosmetic tests on animals.[20]

In the mid-1990s, while working as a model, Reedus appeared in the music videos for "Wicked as It Seems" byKeith Richards, "Violently Happy" byBjörk, "Flat Top" byGoo Goo Dolls, "Cat's in the Cradle" covered byUgly Kid Joe, "Strange Currencies" byR.E.M., and "Fake Plastic Trees" byRadiohead. In 1999, he appeared in the video for "Mean to Me" byTonic. Since achieving fame as an actor, he has also appeared in the videos for "Judas" byLady Gaga, "Sun Down" byTricky (feat. Tirzah), "Gypsy Woman" byHilary Duff, "No Cities to Love" bySleater-Kinney, and "Curse of the Blackened Eye" byOrville Peck.[21]

Reedus is also a painter, sculptor, and photographer who has shown his artwork in galleries in New York City, Barcelona, Berlin, and Frankfurt.[11] He released a book of photography on October 31, 2013, calledThe Sun's Coming Up... Like a Big Bald Head. In September 2014, Reedus announced a fan-art compilation calledThanks for All the Niceness.[22]

Video games

He was set to star inHideo Kojima andGuillermo del Toro's reboot horror gameSilent Hills, but Kojima leftKonami and the game was canceled in 2015.[23][24][25] Reedus reunited with Kojima to star in the videogameDeath Stranding, released in 2019, where he takes the role of Sam Porter Bridges, the protagonist of the game, a courier tasked with reconnecting a post-apocalyptic United States.[26][27] Reedus reprises his role in the game's sequel,Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which was released in 2025.

Reedus has also reprised his role as Daryl Dixon in the 2013 video gameThe Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which is based on the television series, and has additionally provided his likeness as Daryl forFortnite Battle Royale,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, andDead by Daylight.[28]

Personal life

Reedus was in a five-year relationship with Danish-Peruvian ex–Victoria's Secret Angel and supermodelHelena Christensen from 1998 to 2003. Despite reports to the contrary, the two were never married.[30][31] Together they have a son, Mingus, born in 1999.[32][33] They have remained friends and shared joint custody of their son.

Reedus owns part of the restaurant chain Nic and Normans.[34]

In February 2005, Reedus sustained a head injury when a truck collided with his car inGermany. His nose was reconstructed with the aid of four screws and his left eye socket with titanium.[35][36]

In 2015, during the filming ofSky, Reedus met German actressDiane Kruger;[37] the two were first seen together as a couple in July 2016.[38] In November 2018, Kruger gave birth to their daughter, his second and her first child.[39][40]

Reedus has lived inNew York City since 1997.[41][42]

In August 2025, his son Mingus was arrested in New York City and charged with third-degree assault, assault recklessly causing injury, criminal obstruction of breathing, second-degree harassment and aggravated harassment after he allegedly assaulted a woman in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.[43] Prior to this, Mingus had previously pled guilty in 2022 to assaulting a woman.[43]
