TheNokia 9000 Communicatormobile device is the first product inNokia'sCommunicator series, announced atCeBIT 1996 and introduced into the market on five months later, 15 August 1996.[2] It is powered by a 24 MHzIntel i386CPU,[3] with 8 MB of memory, divided between applications (4 MB), program memory (2 MB) and user data (2 MB),[4] runningPEN/GEOS 3.0.
The Communicator, with its digitalGSMcellular telephone, was one of the earliestsmartphones on the market,[5] after theIBM Simon in 1994 and theHP OmniGo 700LX, aDOS-basedpalmtop PC with integrated cradle for theNokia 2110 cellular mobile phone, announced in late 1995 and shipped in August 15, 1996.[1]
The Communicator was highly advanced at the time, featuring sending and receivinge-mail andfax via itsCSD (Circuit Switched Data)modem, to transmit data over theGSM network at a bitrate of 9.6 kbit/s,[6] printing documents using itsIrDA port,[6] and it also had aweb browser and business programs.[7] It is formed of a clamshell design that opens up to reveal a monochromeLCD with a 640 × 200 resolution and a fullQWERTY keyboard similar to aPsionPDA,[4] and weighing 397 grams (14.0 oz).[4] It was priced £1,000 in the UK upon launch (equivalent to £2,400 in 2023).


TheNokia 9110 Communicator is the updated model of the Nokia 9000 Communicator in theCommunicator series.Its biggest change from the 9000 was that it weighed much less, but also had a neweri486-based processor.
Then-CEO of Nokia,Jorma Ollila, said in 2012 regarding the device: "We were five years ahead."[10]

The product line was discontinued in 2000 with the introduction ofNokia 9210 Communicator which introduced a wide TFT colour internal screen, 32-bit ARM9-based RISC CPU at 52 MHz, 16 MB of internal memory, enhanced web abilities and most importantly saw the operating system change to theSymbian operating system. The 9210i launched in 2002 increased the internal memory to 40 MB, video streaming and flash 5 support for the web browser.
The 9xxx Communicators introduced features which later evolved intosmartphones.
The Nokia 9000 is used byVal Kilmer when he playedSimon Templar in the 1997 remake ofThe Saint,[12] and byAnthony Hopkins andChris Rock in the action comedyBad Company.

The Nokia 9000 Communicator provides a wide range of mobile communications services as well as personal organiser functions. The product combines a GSM phone with applications like fax, e-mail, short messaging and Internet access. It also includes the most useful organizer functions; a calendar, an address book and a calculator. All of this is available in a sophisticated, pocket-sized unit.
