Nkasi District (formerlyNkansi District) is one of the threedistricts of theRukwa Region ofTanzania, with its headquarters in the village ofNamanyere. It is bordered to the north by theMpanda District ofKatavi Region; to the east by theSumbawanga District; to the south by theSumbawanga Rural District andZambia; and to the west byLake Tanganyika across from theDemocratic Republic of Congo.[1]
The district covers 13,124 square kilometres (5,067 sq mi).[1] As of 2022[update], the population of the Nkasi District was 425,420.[2][3]
Nkasi District was established[4] on 1 January 1984.[1]
Nkasi District is almost entirely rural, with well over 90% of its population undertakingsubsistence farming, livestock rearing, and traditional fishing.[1] Thirty-three of the villages in the district are located beside Lake Tanganyika.[1] Major crops include: maize, millet, beans, andcassava. Commercial fishing in Lake Tanganyika is limited due to lack of storage facilities as well as capital to acquire fishing gear.[1]
As of 2002[update], Nkasi District was administratively divided into thirteenwards.[2] After the 2012 reorganization it had seventeen wards.[5]
