Nitrate chlorides

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Class of chemical compounds

Nitrate chlorides aremixed anion compounds that contain bothnitrate (NO3) andchloride (Cl) ions. Various compounds are known, includingamino acid salts,[1] and also complexes fromiron group,rare-earth, andactinide metals. Complexes are not usually identified as nitrate chlorides, and would be termedchlorido nitrato complexes.

Formation

[edit]

Nitrate chloride compounds may be formed by mixing solutions of chloride and nitrate slats, the addition of nitric acid to a chloride salt solution, or the addition ofhydrochloric acid to a nitrate solution. Most commonly water is used as a solvent, but other solvents such asmethylene dichloride, methanol orethanol can be used.
