Nithin Kumar Reddy (born 30 March 1983), known professionally asNithiin, is an Indian film actor, distributor and producer who primarily works inTelugu films. Nithiin is a recipient of several accolades including aFilmfare Award and threeSouth Indian International Movie Awards nominations.[1]

Nithiin made his acting debut with theblockbuster filmJayam (2002), for which he received theFilmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South. Nithiin then starred inDil (2003),Sye (2004) andSri Anjaneyam (2004), all of which were commercially successful. After a series of box-office failures, he achieved success with the romance filmsIshq (2012) andGunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde (2013), receivingFilmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu nominations for both these performances. Nithiin went onto further establish himself with notable films such asHeart Attack (2014),Chinnadana Nee Kosam (2014),A Aa (2016),Bheeshma (2020), andMaestro (2021).

Nithiin established his own film production studio, Shresht Movies in 2013. Nithiin is a brand ambassador for theSwachh Bharat campaign for the state ofTelangana.[2]

Early life

Nithin was born to film distributor N. Sudhakar Reddy and Laxmi Reddy.[3][4][5] He has an elder sister named Nikitha Reddy.[6] He completed his education at Geetanjali School,Begumpet and did hisintermediate education from Ratna Junior College and pursued his graduation atShadan College of Engineering and Technology,Gandipet.[7] His father later turned a producer and produced two movies with him,Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde andChinnadana Nee Kosam.[8][failed verification] Nithin has added at extra "i" in his name and spells it as Nithiin.[9]

Career

Debut and early success (2002-2004)

Nithiin started his career withJayam in 2002, directed byTeja. Teja saw him at Sudarshan 35 mm theatre at a screening of hisNuvvu Nenu, on two occasions. He then enquired him about his acting interest and did a screen test and photo session, after which, he selected him as the lead forJayam,[7] which also starredSadha andGopichand.[10] Following the blockbuster success of his debut, he then acted in the action comedy,Dil, directed byV. V. Vinayak and produced byDil Raju, in his production debut. LikeJayam, it went to become a big blockbuster, becoming the third-highest grossing Telugu film of the year, afterSimhadri andOkkadu. Later in the same year, he acted inSambaram, directed byK. Dasaradh, written and produced by Teja. In 2004, Nithiin starred inSri Anjaneyam, directed byKrishna Vamsi, where he played the role as a devotee ofLord Hanuman. This was also the first film where Nithiin dubbed for his dialogues, who until then was voiced bySivaji.[11]

Consecutive failures (2005-2011)

Following his 2004 filmSye, directed byS. S. Rajamouli, Nithin appeared in a number of films, some of which areDhairyam,Agyaat (his onlyHindi film till date, which was directed byRam Gopal Varma, was simultaneously dubbed in Telugu asAdavi) andSeeta Ramula Kalyanam. However, none of these films were commercially successful.[12] Nithiin also has the distinction of most consecutive flops (12) by any actor inTelugu cinema.[13] He tasted success after many years with 2012Vikram Kumar-directedromantic drama filmIshq.[14]

Comeback and stardom (2012-2016)

InIshq, Nithiin paired oppositeNithya Menen, which was also co-produced by his father Sudhakar Reddy.[15] He acted in the filmGunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde in 2013.[16]Isha Talwar andNithya Menen played the lead roles along with Nithiin. Later, he acted inChinnadana Nee Kosam, a film written and directed byA. Karunakaran in 2014,[17] also produced by N. Sudhakar Reddy and sister Nikhita Reddy under their home banner Sresht Movies.[18] Later the year, he played the lead inHeart Attack, directed byPuri Jagannadh. He made the role of ahippie and the movie got a mixed reviews.[19] He acted in the role of a courier boy in the movieCourier Boy Kalyan, released in 2015, directed by Premsai and produced byGautham Vasudev Menon.[20][better source needed] Nithiin acted in the filmA Aa (2016), written and directed byTrivikram Srinivas, oppositeSamantha Ruth Prabhu andAnupama Parameswaran.[21] The film became the biggest grosser in Nithin's career.[22]

Recent work and further career (2017−present)

In 2017, Nithiin acted in the filmLIE which was directed byHanu Raghavapudi. It garnered average reviews from critics and could not perform well at thebox office.[23] In 2018, Nithiin'sChal Mohan Ranga directed byKrishna Chaitanya with co-starMegha Akash. The film performed poorly at the box office.[24] Later the year, he starred inSrinivasa Kalyanam oppositeRaashi Khanna and directed bySatish Vegesna. His 2020 filmBheeshma, directed byVenky Kudumula and starring alongsideRashmika Mandanna was a commercial success.[25]

Nithiin collaborated with directorChandra Sekhar Yeleti forCheck (2021), co-starringRakul Preet Singh and Priya Prakash Varrier. His second release of the year wasRang De, directed byVenky Atluri and starred alongsideKeerthy Suresh.[26] His third release of the year was theblack comedycrime thrillerMaestro which had adirect-to-streaming release onDisney+ Hotstar on 17 September 2021.[27] He played the role of apianist, with critics praising his performance in the film and this is remake of Hindi film Andhadhun.[28][29][better source needed] In September 2021, he started filming was for his next filmMacherla Niyojakavargam. It was released in August 2022 to negative reviews, and surfaced as a box-office bomb.[30] In 2023, Nithiin starred inExtra Ordinary Man.[31] He has partnered with filmmakerVenu Sriram for his next film named Thammudu.[32]

Personal life

In 2020, Nithiin married his girlfriend Shalini Kandukuri.[33] Their wedding took place atFalaknuma Palace,Hyderabad.[34]

ForGunde Jaari Gallanthayinde, Nithiin was placed 4th inRediff.com's "Top Telugu Actors" list.[35] In theHyderabad Times Most Desirable Men list, Nithiin 16th in 2017, 23rd in 2019 and 25th in 2020.[36][37][38] In 2015, he became an ambassador of theSwachh Bharat campaign for the state ofTelangana.[39] During theCOVID-19 pandemic, Nithiin donated ₹10 lakhs to the CM relief funds ofAndhra Pradesh and Telangana.[40] Nithiin is a celebrity endorser for brands and products such asFair & Lovely and Sneha Chicken.[41]
