Niranjan Goswami is an Indianmime artist and stage director, credited by many with pioneering the art form ofmime in India.[1][2] He is the founder ofIndian Mime Theatre, a group promoting the art ofMukhabhinaya (silent acting).[3]
He started his career in the late 1960s withBahurupi, a local theatre group, but later joinedRabindra Bharati University for a course in theatre.[2] In 1976, he foundedIndian Mime Theatre for promoting mime and has performed on many stages in India and abroad.[4] He is a visiting professor at theNational School of Drama (NSD) and many other theatre institutions.[5] He received theSangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2002.[6] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of thePadma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Arts.[7]
