Giambattista "Nino" Cescutti (13 June 1939 – 20 October 2023) was an Italian professionalbasketball player andcoach. He was a member of theFIBA European Selection Teams, in 1965.
Cescutti, who was born inUdine, Italy, started playing the sport of basketball, in the ItalianSocietà Ginnastica Triestina team. After that, he moved to the Italian clubSimmenthal Milano. While he was a Milano player, he won the Italian LeagueScudetto title in 1959.[1]
Cescutti then spent three years playing with the Italian clubVictoria Pesaro, with whom he won the title of the ItalianSerie A League's Top Scorer twice, in the years 1960 and 1962. After that, Cescutti moved to the Italian clubIgnis Varese. While he was a member of Varese, Cescutti won the 1964 Italian League Scudetto title, the1966 FIBA Intercontinental Cup title, and the1967 FIBA Saporta Cup title.[1][2]
Cescutti was a member of the senior men'sItalian national team. He played with Italy in a total of 30matches. He competed with Italy at the1963 FIBA World Championship, the1963 FIBA EuroBasket, and the1965 FIBA EuroBasket.[1]
After his retirement, Cescutti worked as aphysical education teacher, and occasionally served as abasketball coach. While working as ahead coach, he won theSwiss Basketball League championship and theSwiss Cup title withSP Federale Lugano. He also earned a leaguepromotion toItaly's top-tier level basketball league, theLega Basket Serie A, while coachingAssociazione Pallacanestro Udinese.[1][2]
Cescutti died on 20 October 2023, at the age of 84, after he washit by a car, while walking in his hometown.[2]
