


TheNinigo Islands are a group of 31[1] islands within theWestern Islands of theBismarck Archipelago,Papua New Guinea. Their coordinates are1°16′S144°15′E / 1.267°S 144.250°E /-1.267; 144.250.[1]
The first settlers on the Ninigo Islands were theMelanesians. Other groups later settled in the island group, including thePolynesians andGermans. These islands belong toMicronesian outliers.
The first sighting of Wuvulu Island by a European was by the Spanish navigatorIñigo Órtiz de Retes on 27 July 1545, while on board thecarrackSan Juan and returning fromTidore toNew Spain. He charted this island together with the nearby islands,Aua and Manu, asLa Barbada (meaning "the bearded island" in Spanish).[2][3]
