Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva [ 1] [ 2] [ 3] (Bulgarian :Николина Каменова Добрева ; born January 9, 1989), known professionally asNina Dobrev (/ˈ d oʊ b r ɛ v / DOH -brev ), is a Canadian actress. She is known for portrayingElena Gilbert andKatherine Pierce inThe CW 's supernatural drama seriesThe Vampire Diaries (2009–2015).
Born inSofia and raised inToronto , Dobrev made her screen debut playing minor roles in various films, before landing her breakout role asMia Jones in the drama seriesDegrassi: The Next Generation (2006–2009). She later rose to prominence with her role inThe Vampire Diaries , and appeared in several feature films, including the 2012 coming-of-age dramaThe Perks of Being a Wallflower , the comediesLet's Be Cops andThe Final Girls (2014), and the 2017 science-fiction dramaFlatliners . Her biggest commercial success came withXXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017). She also starred in the romantic comediesDog Days (2018),Then Came You (2018), andLove Hard (2021), and had a leading role in the sitcomFam (2019).
Early life Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva was born on January 9, 1989, inSofia , Bulgaria, to Kamen Dobrev, a computer specialist, and Michaela Dobreva (née Radeva), an artist.[ 2] [ 4] She has an older brother.[ 5] [ 6] When she was two, her family relocated to Canada, where she was raised inScarborough, Toronto .[ 7] At age 10, she moved back to Bulgaria with her mother for two years.[ 8]
Dobrev attended Vradenburg Junior Public School and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School, where she started ballet and jazz classes and competed inrhythmic gymnastics .[ 6] She took acting classes atArmstrong Acting Studios in Toronto.[ 9] Dobrev subsequently attended the arts program atWexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough until her graduating year.[ 10]
Dobrev entered post-secondary studies atRyerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in Toronto, majoring in sociology, though her pursuit of an acting career prevented her from graduating.[ 11] [ 12]
Career Dobrev at the2008 Toronto International Film Festival Dobrev's first major acting role was as Mia on the teen drama television seriesDegrassi: The Next Generation , a role she played for three seasons starting in 2006.[ 5] She appeared in several feature films in the mid-2000s, includingFugitive Pieces (2007) andAway from Her (2007). Dobrev also headlined a number of television films, includingSci Fi Channel's Never Cry Werewolf (2008),MTV 'sThe American Mall (2008), and two Lifetime original movies.[ 13] [ 14]
Dobrev leftDegrassi in 2009 to star inThe CW 's supernatural drama seriesThe Vampire Diaries , a television adaptation of thebook series of the same name , playing the lead role ofElena Gilbert .[ 5] [ 15] Dobrev recurrently played a 500-year-old doppelgänger vampire named Katherine Pierce.[ 16] She played the Petrova doppelgänger progenitor Amara, also known as the world's first immortal, in season 5.[ 17] She crossed over toThe Vampire Diaries spinoffThe Originals , as doppelgänger character Tatia, in an episode in 2014.[ 18] In April 2015, Dobrev announced viaInstagram that she would be leavingThe Vampire Diaries after portraying Elena for six seasons.[ 19] In January 2017, it was announced that Dobrev would return as Elena and Katherine inThe Vampire Diaries series finale.[ 20]
Dobrev had a minor role inAtom Egoyan 's erotic thrillerChloe ,[ 5] theatrically released bySony Pictures Classics on March 26, 2010.[ 21] [ 22] Dobrev also had a small role in the 2011 filmThe Roommate .[ 23]

Dobrev played the role of Vicki Summers in the 2015 horror comedy filmThe Final Girls .[ 27] In September 2015, she was cast in the filmArrivals as flight attendant Izzy;[ 28] the film was later retitledDepartures and was scheduled to go into production in April 2017.[ 29] [ 30] That year, she was also cast in the romantic comedyCrash Pad , which began filming in Vancouver in fall 2015.[ 31]
In 2017, Dobrev co-starred as weapons specialist Becky Clearidge in the action film sequelXXX: Return of Xander Cage .[ 32] [ 33] It grossed $346 million worldwide, becoming Dobrev's most successful film.[ 34] The same year, she co-starred as Marlo in the remake ofFlatliners .[ 35] [ 36]
Dobrev at the 2012San Diego Comic-Con In March 2018, Dobrev was cast as Clem in the comedyFam , a CBSsitcom pilot that was picked up to series in May 2018.[ 37] [ 38] It premiered January 10, 2019.[ 39] It was canceled on May 10, 2019, after one season.[ 40] Dobrev starred as Chloe in theRoger Avary thrillerLucky Day , released 2019.[ 41] She also joined the cast of the filmRun This Town ,[ 42] which was released in March 2020.[ 43] In July 2020, it was announced that Dobrev would star in and serve as an executive producer for a television adaptation of theWoman 99 book series.[ 44]
Activism and charity work Dobrev supports multiple charitable causes, includingPuma 's 2011 non-profit Project Pink,[ 45] which supports numerous breast cancer charities, and Hunger Bites, an organization that is dedicated to reducing hunger in 27 districts acrossPennsylvania . She is also recognized for her long-term involvement with theWE movement , a Canadian-based charity that empowers youth as agents of change.[ 46] She took part in aMe to We volunteer trip toKenya to help build a school.[ 47] [ 48] She hosted theWe Day event inToronto in 2011 and made an appearance on stage at WE Day California 2019.[ 49] [ 50] Other social and charity issues with which she has been involved include theElton John AIDS Foundation .[ 51]
Personal life Dobrev is a dual citizen of Bulgaria and Canada.[ 52] She speaks fluent English and Bulgarian, and she is conversant in French.[ 53] [ 54] Her mother tongue is Bulgarian. While filmingThe Vampire Diaries , she lived inAtlanta ; however, she moved to Los Angeles after leaving the series in 2015.[ 55] [ 7]
Dobrev has invested in various beverage companies[ 56] and co-owns a wine brand with dancerJulianne Hough called Fresh Vine Wine.[ 57]
From 2010 to 2013, Dobrev was in a relationship with American actor andThe Vampire Diaries co-starIan Somerhalder .[ 58] She later dated retired American professionalsnowboarder ,skateboarder andOlympic gold medalistShaun White . They became engaged in October 2024,[ 59] [ 60] but in September 2025, it was reported that they had ended their engagement and separated.[ 61]
On Dobrev's birthday in 2025, she had to evacuate her Los Angeles home due to awildfire . Her home did not burn down, which made her feelsurvivor's guilt .[ 62]
