Athanasiou was born in Athens. He comes from the youth ranks ofAtromitos.
In January 2025, Athanasiou scored in what would be an Atromitos tie to Panathinaikos in the Greek Cup.[1]
On 4 July 2025, Athanasiou joinedSuper League Greece clubOlympiacos.[2] Four days later, he was sent on a season-long loan toPrimeira Liga sideRio Ave.[3]
