Nikolaos Petimezas orPetmezas (Greek:Νικόλαος Πετ[ι]μεζάς, 1790–1865) was aGreek revolutionary leader during theGreek War of Independence, politician and officer of theHellenic Gendarmerie.
Nikolaos Petimezas hailed from the importantarmatolos clan of the Petimezas or Petmezas from the village of Soudena, nearKalavryta.[1] He was born in 1790 as the son ofAthanasios Petimezas.[2]
After his father was murdered in 1804 he fled to British-heldZakynthos, and enrolled in theBritish-sponsored Greek light infantry units there, along with his brotherVasileios.[2]
He returned to thePeloponnese at the outbreak of theGreek War of Independence, and fought in several battles at Kalavryta,Levidi,Corinth,Argos, andAkrata.[2] In 1826, with 600 men, he and his brother occupiedMega Spilaio and drove back the attacks ofIbrahim Pasha of Egypt.[2] He then fought inAttica underGeorgios Karaiskakis againstReşid Mehmed Pasha.[2] He reached the rank oflieutenant general.[2]
He died in Kalavryta in 1865.
