Niewiadom (German:Birkenau) is adistrict ofRybnik,Silesian Voivodeship, southernPoland. In the late 2013 it had about 4,700 inhabitants.[1]
The village was first mentioned asNoviedomie in the 14th century.
In 1792, on the border withRadlin, theHoym (laterIgnacy) coal mine was opened in Niewiadom.
In 1859, in the northern part, theBeatensglück (Polish:Szczęście Beaty,lit. 'The Happiness of Beth') coal mine was opened, closed in 1919.[2]
AfterWorld War I in theUpper Silesia plebiscite 105 out of 169 voters in Niewiadom voted in favour of joining Poland, against 64 opting for staying in Germany.[3] In 1922 it became a part ofSilesian Voivodeship,Second Polish Republic. They were then annexed byNazi Germany at the beginning ofWorld War II. After the war it was restored to Poland.
In 1955 it became a part ofNiedobczyce, which was on May 27, 1975 amalgamated with Rybnik.[4]
