History

[edit]

ABurgward at the former site of aSlavic fortress (gord) was first mentioned in an 1161 deed, at the time when theAscanian margraveAlbert the Bear conquered theHevelli lands in the north. The nameNymik orNiemeke is possibly derived from the town ofNijmegen in theLow Countries, the place of origin ofGerman settlers. The estates were held by theTeutonic Order and the former village was vested withtown privileges in 1228.

Since the mid 13th century, the area was part of the AscanianDuchy of Saxe-Wittenberg and, from 1356, of theSaxon electorate. Located on its northeastern border, it was the scene of numerous conflicts withBrandenburg knights and the forces of theMagdeburg archbishops. The town again suffered fromHussite raids in 1429, marauding Imperial troops after the Saxon defeat at the 1547Battle of Mühlberg, and was devastated in theThirty Years' War.

After theNapoleonic Wars and the 1815Congress of Vienna, the town fell toPrussia and was incorporated into theProvince of Brandenburg. From 1868, youngRobert Koch worked in Niemegk as a country doctor.

DuringWorld War II, Niemegk was the location of a subcamp of theSachsenhausen concentration camp for prisoners of various nationalities, especially Norwegians, but also Dutch, Poles (includingkidnapped children, which were to beGermanized and adopted by German families), French, Czechs, Russians, Britons, Germans.[3] After the war, the town was part ofEast Germany.
