Nicholas Pickering[3] (born 4 August 1963 inSouth Shields)[4] is a former professionalfootballer who played as amidfielder inthe Football League forSunderland,Coventry City,Derby County,Darlington andBurnley.[5] He wascapped once for theEngland national team, againstAustralia in 1983.[6] He was part of theEngland U21 team that won the1984 European under-21 championships[7] and reached the semi-finaltwo years later.[8] As a Coventry City player he was on the winning side in the1987 FA Cup Final.[9]
After retiring as a player he returned to his native north-east, where he was involved in youth coaching and radio work.
In his first season in Sunderland's first team he had the honour of being voted both the club's young player of the year and player of the year by the fans.[citation needed]
