Nhat Nguyen (Vietnamese:Nguyễn Nhật,[ŋwiən˦ˀ˥˦ɲət̚˧˨ʔ˨]; born 16 June 2000) is a Vietnamese-born Irishbadminton player.[4][5]
Nguyen was born in the suburbs ofHanoi, Vietnam and moved toCavan, Ireland with his parents andolder sister, when he was six years old. He began representing Ireland internationally when he received his Irish passport and citizenship in 2017; before that he was unable to travel outside Ireland to compete overseas.[4] He was the gold medalist at the 2016European U17 Championships in the boys' singles event, and also won bronze in the doubles event partnered withPaul Reynolds. In the same year, he clinched the men's singles title at theIrish National Championships.[6] Nguyen won his first senior international title at thePolish International in the men's doubles event with Reynolds,[7] and the men's singles title at theWelsh International after that.[8] He also competed for Ireland in the men's singles events at2019 European Games, the2023 European Games, and the2024 Summer Olympics.[2]
He is the younger brother of Ireland's firstEuropean Weightlifting Championships medalist,Tham Nguyen Gough.
