Ngāti Koata orNgāti Kōata is aMāoriiwi ofNew Zealand, originating on the west coast ofWaikato, but now mainly at the northern tip of South Island.

Ngāti Koatawhakapapa back to Koata who lived nearKāwhia in the 17th century. She had two sons, Kāwharu and Te Wehi (founder ofNgāti Te Wehi).[1] Te Totara pa on the south shore of Kāwhia was shared withNgāti Toa in the early 19th century.[2] Following themusket wars, many of the iwi moved south to Kapiti Island and thenTe Tau Ihu in the mid 1820s.[3]

Claims to land were considered by Parliament in 1929[4] and 1936.[5] The latter related to land atWakapuaka and the role ofTe Rauparaha.[6]

13 pa sites in the area ofRaglan,Te Uku,Te Ākau,Ruapuke andAotea have been associated with Ngāti Koata.[7]

The Ngāti Koata Trust was formed after signing the iwi's $11.76m.[8] The tribe'sDeed of Settlement was signed at Whakatū Marae inNelson on 20 December 2012.[9][10]

Ngāti Koata logo was designed and gifted to the iwi by Puhanga Tupaea.
