Newton Lee is acomputer scientist who is an author and administrator in the field of education and technology commercialization. He is known for his total information awareness book series.[2]

Education

Lee holds a B.S. and M.S. incomputer science fromVirginia Tech,[3] and anelectrical engineering degree and honorary doctorate fromVincennes University.[4] He was a 2021 graduate of theFBI Citizens Academy[5] and the founding president of theLos Angeles chapter of theVirginia Tech Alumni Association.[6]

Career

Lee is editor and curator of SpringerBriefs inComputer Science,[7]Springer International Series onComputer Entertainment andMedia Technology,[8] and Springer Encyclopedia of Computer Graphics and Games.[9]

Previously, Lee was adjunct professor of Media Technology at Woodbury University,[10] senior producer and lead engineer atThe Walt Disney Company,[11] research scientist atVTLS where he created the world's first annotated multimediaOPAC for the U.S.National Agricultural Library,[12] computer science and artificial intelligence researcher atAT&TBell Laboratories where he created Bell Labs' first-ever commercial AI tool,[13] and research staff member at theInstitute for Defense Analyses conducting military-standardAda research for theU.S. Department of Defense (DoD).[14]

In 2003, Lee founded the nonprofitComputers in Entertainment. It was published by theAssociation for Computing Machinery (ACM)[15] for which Lee interviewedRoy E. Disney,[16]Quincy Jones,[17] andGeorge Lucas.[18] He oversaw the journal and magazine for 15 years from 2003 to 2018, which is the longest term held as editor-in-chief in the history of ACM.[19][20]

Lee was credited as asoftware engineer forDisney's Animated Storybooks (1994 video game)[26] (featured onBillboard[27]) andPocahontas (1996 video game).[28]

Lee was also credited forweb design andgame development for the 2015 documentary filmFindingNoah: The Search forNoah's Ark.[29]

Lee has executive produced dance-pop songs that have charted on U.S.Billboard, U.K.Music Week, and U.S.iTunes HOT 100 (Electronic) as well as appeared onAmerican Idol andLifetime original movieCheyenne.[30]

In 2016, he curated and released theGoogle It (Soundtrack) music album consisting ofRoger Hodgson'sThe Logical Song,Princess X'sFree, and six cover songs fromthe Beatles,the Eagles,R.E.M.,Pink Floyd, andZager and Evans.[31]

Politics

Lee is the chairman of theCaliforniaTranshumanist Party[32] and the Education and Media Advisor for theUnited StatesTranshumanist Party.[33] Previously, he was a campaign advisor toZoltan Istvan for the2016 U.S. presidential election.[34]

Lee is the founding president of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Institute for Education, Research, and Scholarships (IFERS) acknowledged byAlan Kay andQuincy Jones at theAmerican Film Institute on November 4, 2006 during theComputers in Entertainment awards ceremony[35][36] as well as bySenator Richard D. Roth of theCalifornia State Senate on March 14, 2016 in support ofType 1 diabetes awareness and research.[37]

On Earth Day on April 22, 2018, Lee was an organizer of the IFERS-sponsored 2018 Earth Day Peace Conference and Movie Screening.[38]
