Nepenthes maryae is a tropicalpitcher plant native toCentral Sulawesiprovince on theIndonesian island ofSulawesi.[1] It is known from a singleherbarium specimen collected in 2000 on an undisclosed mountain at 2,100 mabove sea level, where the species grew insubmontanemossy forest alongsideN. eymae,N. nigra, andN. tentaculata.[1] It is a member ofsectionTentaculatae, which also includes 8 other species fromBorneo and Sulawesi:N. glabrata,N. hamata,N. muluensis,N. murudensis,N. nigra,N. pitopangii,N. tentaculata, andN. undulatifolia.[1]Nepenthes maryae is distinguished from all other species in this group by the presence of short hairs on the lower surface of the pitcher lid andbracts on the majority (c. 75%) of flowers.[1]
Thespecific epithetmaryae commemoratesMary Mendum (née Bates) (1945–2004), a botanist at theRoyal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.[1][2]
