Neotamandua is an extinctgenus ofanteaters that lived in theMiocene toPliocene inSouth America.
Their fossils have been found in the MioceneCollón Cura Formation of Argentina,[2] theHonda Group atLa Venta inColombia and the PlioceneAraucano Formation inArgentina.[3] Its closest living relatives are thegiant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) andtamanduas (genusTamandua).[3][2] The speciesNeotamandua borealis was suggested to be an ancestor of the giant anteater.[4] Patterson (1992) suggested theNeotamandua fossils are very similar toMyrmecophaga, which would meanNeotamandua may be congeneric withMyrmecophaga.[2]
