Neomonachus is a genus ofearless seals, within thefamily Phocidae. It comprises two species: the endangeredHawaiian monk seal, and theextinctCaribbean monk seal. Prior to 2014, all three species ofmonk seals were placed in the genusMonachus, but that was found to beparaphyletic.[1]
