TheNemeturii (Gaulish *Nemeturioi, 'the inhabitants ofnemetons') orNemeturi were aGallic tribe dwelling in theAlpes Maritimae during theIron Age.
They are mentioned asNemeturicae byColumella (1st c. AD),[1] and asNemoturica andNematuri (var.nemet-) byPliny (1st c. AD).[2][3]
The ethnic nameNemeturii is a latinized form ofGaulish *Nemeturioi. It derives from the stemnemeto-, meaning 'sacred place, sanctuary'.[3]Patrizia de Bernardo Stempel has proposed to interpret the name asNemet-urii ('the inhabitants of sacred places').[4] Alternatively, it may be built on a suffix -turii found in the ethnonymsViturii (a people of theGenoa region) andEguiturii (upperVerdon valley).[5]
The Nemeturii dwelled in the upperVerdon orVar valley.[6] Their territory was located east of theEguiturii, west of theEcdinii, north of theVergunni andNerusii, and south of theSavincates andCaturiges.[7]
They are mentioned by Pliny the Elder as one of the Alpine tribes conquered by Rome in 16–15 BC, and whose name was engraved on theTropaeum Alpium.[8]
