Nelson Alberto Barahona Collins (born 22 November 1987 inColón) is a retiredPanamanianfootball attacking midfielder.
Nicknamedel Ruso, Barahona played numerous of years inÁrabe Unido's youth team before in 2007 making his debut with the senior team. After having several good appearances with the club and thePanama youth team he moved toUruguayan sideFénix.Russo made his league debut withFénix as a second-half substitute on 27 February 2008 againstNacional.[1] Unfortunately,Fénix were relegated and Barahona returned toANAPROF sideÁrabe Unido where he was crowned champion of theANAPROF Clausura 2008.
On 28 February 2009 Barahona signed a 1-year loan contract withColombian sideAtlético Huila making him the second Panamanian in team afterAmilcar Henriquez was signed in December 2008.[2] He played his last game forÁrabe Unido on 27 February 2009.
By 2010 he was transferred toIndependiente Medellín, a club with which he had the chance to play the2010 Copa Libertadores.[3] At the end of the year, he was loaned toVenezuelan sideCaracas FC.[4]
In mid-2011 he returned toIndependiente Medellín, club owner of his sports rights, but on 2 September 2011 he was hired byDeportivo Táchira ofVenezuela whom he subsequently left in December 2011.[5]
On 17 January 2012Atlético Huila confirmed him as the new reinforcement for the 2012 season, Barahona joining compatriotsAmílcar Henríquez andAlejandro Vélez at the club.[6] This is his second stay in the club. In February 2013, he signed withItagüí[7] and he moved toAlianza Petrolera in December 2013.[8]
In 2015, Barahona returned to Panama after seven years abroad to play forSan Francisco.[9]
Barahona was part of thePanama U-20 squad that participated in the2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. He scored Panama's only goal of the tournament againstCzech Republic.[10]
He made his senior debut forPanama on 22 August 2007 againstGuatemala and has, as of 1 May 2015, earned a total of 45 caps, scoring 4 goals.[11] He represented his country in 13FIFA World Cup qualification matches[10] and was part of thenational team that won the2009 UNCAF Nations Cup inHonduras.[12] In 2011, he was called up byJulio Dely Valdés to play at the2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
