Neal Skupski (born 1 December 1989) is aBritish professionaltennis player who specialises in doubles. He has a career-high doublesranking ofworld No. 1. He achieved this milestone in November 2022, topping the rankings jointly with long-time partnerWesley Koolhof at the end of that year. Skupski became the third British world no. 1 in doubles afterJamie Murray andJoe Salisbury.

Skupski is a three-timeGrand Slam champion, having won the2023 Wimbledon Championships in men's doubles with Koolhof, and the2021 and2022 Wimbledon Championships in mixed doubles alongsideDesirae Krawczyk. Koolhof and Skupski were also runners-up at the2022 US Open, and Krawczyk and Skupski reached the final at the2024 Australian Open and2024 French Open. He has won 17 doubles titles on theATP Tour, including theMadrid Open,Canadian Open andParis Masters atMasters 1000 level in 2022.[2]

Skupski has representedGreat Britain in theDavis Cup since 2019 and competed at the2020 Summer Olympics.

Early life and college career

Neal Skupski was born inLiverpool to Mary Skupski and Ken Skupski Sr. and attendedKing David High School. Neal is the younger brother of fellow tennis playerKen Skupski Jr., with whom he has regularly partnered since 2013 until Ken Jr.'s retirement from professional tennis in July 2022.[3]

He competed in a handful of matches in 2010 and 2011, before taking a year out to finish his degree atLouisiana State University, where he studied sports administration as well as playing college tennis.[4][5]

Professional career

2013: ATP debut, first ATP final, top 100 debut

He began competing as a professional in 2013, initially playing on the Futures andChallenger Tours. After playing with a number of partners, he started competing more frequently with his brother Ken from March 2013 onwards.[6] The pair reached the final of theNottingham Trophy on theChallenger Tour, before winning five Challenger titles in 2013, as of 23 September.[7][8] These wins saw Neal move into the world top 200 in July 2013.

At the2013 Kremlin Cup the Skupski brothers entered their firstATP World Tour tournament, progressing to the final, where they lost on a tie-break.[9] Following the final, Neal moved into the top 100 for the first time, having been unranked at the start of the season. He ended 2013 ranked 86th in the world.

2017–2018: First Grand Slam quarterfinal, first two ATP titles

At the2017 Wimbledon Championships he reached the quarterfinals as a wildcard for the first time in his career partnering with his brother Ken where they were defeated by 4th seeded pairŁukasz Kubot andMarcelo Melo.

Skupski won his first ATP Tour title at theOpen Sud de France, partnering again with his brotherKen, their first ATP title together.[10] He won his second and biggest title of his career thus far at the ATP 5002018 Vienna Open partnering with fellow BritJoe Salisbury.

2019–2020: First Major mixed-doubles & doubles semifinals and Masters final

Skupski and Spanish partnerMaría José Martínez Sánchez were defeated in their mixed doubles semifinal at the2019 Australian Open by third seeded pair and eventual championsBarbora Krejčíková andRajeev Ram.

Following the 2019 French Open, Skupski formed a partnership with fellow BritonJamie Murray.[11] With Murray he reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at the2019 US Open (tennis) where they lost to the top-seeded Colombian pair and eventual championsJuan Sebastián Cabal andRobert Farah.

He made his first Masters 1000 final at the2020 Western & Southern Open defeating top seeded pair Cabal/Farah in the first round en route before losing toPablo Carreno Busta andAlex de Minaur in the final, and won his fourth ATP doubles title at the2020 Sofia Open by a walkover fromJürgen Melzer andÉdouard Roger-Vasselin.

The pair Skupski/Murray also reached the quarterfinals at theFrench Open, which was Neal's first showing at this level at this Major and third overall and again the quarterfinals at theUS Open.

2021: Top 15 debut and Wimbledon mixed-doubles champion, Olympics debut

In March, Skupski won his fifth ATP title with his brother Ken at theMexican Open.[12] Two weeks later, he reached his second Masters-1000 final with compatriotDan Evans at theMiami Open and entered the top 20 in the doubles rankings for the first time. Again two weeks later and partnering with Dan Evans, he reached his third Masters 1000 final at theMonte-Carlo Masters and climbed to a career-high ranking in doubles of world No. 16 on 19 April 2021. On 11 July 2021, partnering withDesirae Krawczyk, he won theWimbledon mixed-doubles final.[13] He reached the top 15 in doubles on 12 July 2021.

At the2021 San Diego Open Skupski won his sixth title and second of the season partneringJoe Salisbury.[14]

2022: Partnership with Koolhof, Four ATP & Three Masters & mixed doubles titles, World No. 1

Partnering withWesley Koolhof he won two ATP 250 titles during the Australian Summer swing, before the2022 Australian Open. The pair reached the quarterfinals at the first Grand Slam of the year for the first time at this Major. They won their third title at the2022 Qatar ExxonMobil Open dropping only one set en route to the final where they defeatedRohan Bopanna andDenis Shapovalov in straight sets.[15] He reached the final of the2022 Miami Open with Koolhof where they lost toJohn Isner andHubert Hurkacz.

Seeded seventh, they reached their second Masters 1000 final at the2022 Mutua Madrid Open after defeating John Isner and Hubert Hurkacz.[16] In the final they defeated fifth seedsRobert Farah andJuan Sebastián Cabal to win their first Masters 1000 title in their career and as a pair.[17]

At the2022 French Open he reached the quarterfinals with Koolhof for the second time at this Major, defeating unseeded pair of AmericansTommy Paul andMackenzie McDonald.[18] As a result, Skupski entered the top 10 of theATP rankings in doubles for the first time on 6 June 2022.

At the2022 Wimbledon Championships he successfully defended and won his second Major title in mixed doubles again partneringDesirae Krawczyk. They defeatedMatthew Ebden andSamantha Stosur in straight sets.[19] He reached the top 5 in the doubles rankings on 18 July 2022.

At the2022 National Bank Open he reached with Koolhof the semifinals of a Masters 1000 for the third time in the season defeatingLloyd Glasspool/Harri Heliövaara.[20] Next the pair advanced to the eight final of the season defeating Krawietz/Mies.[21] They won their sixth title defeatingDan Evans andJohn Peers.[22] As a result, he moved to world No. 4 in the doubles rankings on 15 August 2022 and to No. 3 on 22 August 2022.

Seeded 2nd at theUS Open the pair reached the quarterfinals defeating Wimbledon champions Australian pair of Ebden/Purcell in three sets.[23] Next they defeatedMarcelo Demoliner andJoao Sousa to reach the semifinals.[24] In the semifinals, they defeatedMarcelo Arevalo andJean-Julien Rojer. In the finals, they lost in straight sets toRajeev Ram andJoe Salisbury.[25] At the2022 Rolex Paris Masters the pair Koolhof/Skupski reached the semifinals defeating ninth seedsRohan Bopanna/Matwe Middelkoop climbing to World No. 1 and World No. 2 and solidifying the No. 1 position as a pair in the doubles race.[26] They reached their 10th final and fourth at a Masters level for the season defeating seventh seedsLloyd Glasspool /Harri Heliövaara.[27] They won their third Masters title and seventh title for the season defeating eight seedsIvan Dodig/Austin Krajicek in the final.[28] They also clinched the No. 1 year-end ranking as a team.[29] Skupski became joint world No. 1 with Koolhof in doubles on 14 November 2022.[30]

2023: Wimbledon champion, Indian Wells finalist

The world No. 1 duo Koolhof and Skupski continued their good form reaching yet another Masters final at the2023 BNP Paribas Open where they lost toRohan Bopanna andMatthew Ebden.

At the2023 French Open he reached the quarterfinals with Wesley Koolhof for the third time in his career. He lost to the 10th seeded team ofHoracio Zeballos andMarcel Granollers.

He won his first Grand Slam title at the2023 Wimbledon Championships with Koolhof and returned to the No. 1 ranking.[31][32]

2024: Two Grand Slam mixed doubles finals

Skupski andDesirae Krawczyk reached the mixed doubles final at theAustralian Open in January losing toHsieh Su-wei andJan Zielinski 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 11-9.[33] The pair also suffered similar disappointment at theFrench Open in June, when they lost out in the final 6-4 7–5 toLaura Siegemund andEdouard Roger-Vasselin.[34]

At theQueen's Club Championships, he combined withMichael Venus to win the doubles title, defeatingTaylor Fritz andKaren Khachanov in the final.[35]

2025: French and US Open finals, 300th ATP win

In February, Skupski and new regular playing partner Joe Salisbury reached the final at theQatar Open, losing to fellow BritonsJulian Cash andLloyd Glasspool in straight sets.[36] They were also runners-up at theBarcelona Open in April, losing toSander Arends andLuke Johnson in the final.[37] During the tournament Skupski recorded his 300th win on the ATP Tour.[38]

Skupski and Salisbury were runners-up at theFrench Open, losing in the final toMarcel Granollers andHoracio Zeballos in three sets.[39][40]

In August, they made it to the final at theCanadian Open, but lost to second seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool.[41]

They reached the final at theUS Open, but, in a repeat of the French Open final earlier that year, lost to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in three sets despite having three championship points during the match.[42]

Skupski and Salisbury went unbeaten to top their group at the season-endingATP Finals inTurin[43] and then defeated world No. 1 pairing Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool in the semifinals,[44] before losing to Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten in the final in straight sets.[45] Two days after the final, Salisbury announced he was taking a break from tennis until at least April 2026 due to anxiety and it was revealed that Skupski would begin the new season playing alongsideChristian Harrison.[46]

World TeamTennis

Skupski has played five seasons withWorld TeamTennis starting in 2015 when he made his league debut with theCalifornia Dream. He has since played four seasons (2016-2019) for theNew York Empire. Skupski was a part of theNew York Empire, who claimed the King Trophy during 2020 WTT season atThe Greenbrier.[47]

Personal life

Skupski is the younger brother of former tennis playerKen Skupski and the pair regularly competed together until 2021, most notably winning the2021 Mexican Open.

Skupski is consideredAndy Murray's biggest rival in theirFantasy Premier League, "His knowledge isn't that high level, but he spends hours on the apps and websites."[48]

Skupski has stated that he is an avid and lifelongLiverpool F.C. fan; he had on occasion asked for Liverpool's scoreline during his concurrent tennis matches.[49]
